Coming...Table Driven Suppression/Visibility for Inventor!
I am in the final stages of an Inventor Add-In that will allow Inventor users to implement Table Driven Part Feature Suppression/Assembly Component Visibility control. This is driven by specially named parameters. The user can define a prefix (i.e "PDS_") and the Add-In will scan the parameter table for these specially named parameters (which can be driven from Excel or your Master file...). The Add-In will then look for a feature/component whose name matches the text following the prefix. The Add-In will then set Suppression/Visibility based on the value of this parameter (0 = Suppressed/Not Visible, 1 = Un-suppressed/Visible). More later. Direct any comments to me.

Autodesk Upgrades
The March 9, 2004 issue of upFront.eZine contains a guest editorial by Darren Young entitled "This AutoCAD Upgrade Makes Sense". Although addressing specifically the upcoming AutoCAD 2005 release, Mr. Young makes several good points in regard to how most users in the CAD community have replaced Objectivity, Insight and Imagination (his words) with bitching and bashing (my words). There is so much wrong with Autodesk the marketing entity, but how can you complain when the software may offer you ways to use your time more productively?
I have met my share of people who tell me that no thanks, AutoCAD R12 does everything they need and that there is no need to show them a fancy 3D cartoon generator. I simply smile and nod knowing that the same fate as the dinosaur awaits them. I then think of the job I finished recently using Inventor 7/8. Budgeted to take 500 hours, it was completed in less than 200 hours, error-free and ahead of schedule within an already compressed time frame. The visual feedback was not only pleasing to the eye, but made life easier for both myself and the customer who had to fit the equipment into an existing space. Sure it is tough to find the time but I will learn the new features and find some way to use them just as I did with Paper Space and other major enhancements before them. I will continue to customize for myself and others. Reject complacency!

- The add-in will add a menu panel in the Drawing environment for program operation.
- Only the first Parts List on any sheet will be recognized. Multiple Parts Lists are not supported.
- Frozen Cells and un-modifiable columns will not be changed.
